Gift Economy, Donations and The Future of the Temple

Recently a young woman taking a college class wanted to write a paper on the Temple, and asked me to fill out a questionnaire.  One of the questions asked was where I thought the Temple would be 20 years from now.  My answer was: That will depend entirely on the community.

For 23 years, founder Genevieve Vaughan has been almost single-handedly funding the Temple. (Donations received from supporters other than Gen Vaughan come to less than 5% of our current annual budget. )

Ms. Vaughan, now in her late 70’s, has indicated it is time for us to find alternative sources of funding for the Temple. We have just formed a Temple Council which will be addressing this and other business of the facility, but your generous support, both financial and spiritual is needed.

Monetary donations are tax deductible and can be made:

* online through Paypal on our website (www.sekhmettemple.com)

* by mail to:  Temple of Goddess Spirituality, dedicated to Sekhmet, PO Box 813, Indian Springs, NV 89018

* in the Donation Box located at the Temple bulletin board.

In addition, I will be posting monthly a list of supplies and materials currently needed (should you prefer to donate goods,) and the jobs around the property which I would welcome help with.

We will continue the “Silent Auction” fund raisers at the Full Moon potlucks, and have plans for an on-line store.

I’m sure our talented Temple Council will be coming up with many more creative ways to keep our beloved Temple of Sekhmet going.

Blessed be!

Temple News and Events

Hello Family -

Quite a few things to share with you. First, June events at the Temple:

Tuesday, June 2: Full Moon (Open to All)
Tuesday, June 16: New Moon (Women Only)
Sunday, June 21: Summer Solstice (Open to All)
All three June events begin with potluck in the pavilion at 7:00 p.m., followed by ritual in the Temple at 8:00 p.m.

Now an update on the Pavilion Project!

So far, $866 of the estimated $7,000 we need to complete the pavilion has been received in donations. We spent $631.42 for additional chairs and tables, bringing our count up to tables and seating for 40! Yeah!!!!  So we have $234 of the approximate $1,800 needed to purchase and install the next shade structure. We’re hoping to have this up by mid-September, as we have been chosen as the site for this years Pagan Pride Event, on Saturday September 26 (another “Yeah!!!!”).

Posters and cards are being printed up of the lovely Sekhmet that mural artist Nikki Danby has donated to the Temple, and they will be available for sale shortly. All profits from the sale of these items directly fund the Temple.

The poor old Guest House has had a heck of a workout this spring (non-stop visitors from February until now), and is in need of some TLC. I’m designating June 3 – June 13 as “Guest House Maintenance” time. I’d like to get the front porch painted, all carpets and windows cleaned, everything dusted and aired, and some sealing and trim work finished. If you can donate a bit of time for cleaning, painting, etc, please give me a call at 702-569-0630.

Love and blessings,
Candace

Fire Safety

Fire Safety is a Priority

On Sunday, Spirit told me to turn on the hose and go out to the Temple. As I had not filled the water bowls that morning, I assumed this was what the guidance was about. However, when I got there, I found the stump seat next to Virgen de Guadalupe burning!

There were several people in the Temple on Sunday morning, and I do not think this was an act of vandalism, although with the high winds we’ve been having, it could have been a disaster.

You can see a rock still sitting on the stump, and it appears that someone set a candle on it and walked away.

Please do not use anything but tea lights in the Temple, and only in a glass container with sand in the bottom!

If the person responsible reads this, please talk to me about it, so that we can know that it was not deliberate.

Thanks to all for being safety-conscious.

Love and Blessings,

Candace Ross

Temple news and upcoming events

At the suggestion of Temple founder Gen Vaughan, we are raising the reward to $4,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the theft of the Sekhmet statue. An updated reward poster can be downloaded via the link below:
Sekhmet Reward Poster

In less than a week, we have raised just over 1/3 of the funds needed for the replacement statue and new security system! Thank you everyone for your generosity. All donations made will go into the temple’s general fund so that if we raise money in excess of what is needed for these specific projects, it can be used for other current or future needs.

Donations can be made by Paypal via the button below, or in person at the temple, or by mail to:

Temple of Goddess Spirituality
PO Box 813
Indian Springs, Nv 89018

The statue has been ordered and we are planning the installation/dedication for the Full Moon on Sunday, August 10th. Temple Founder Genevieve Vaughan will be here for the celebration. I am hoping you will all be here to welcome both our new Sekhmet statue and Genevieve.

We had a great time Thursday, May 1st, celebrating Beltane by feeding the fairies, passing between two Bel fires, and dancing the May Pole. Thanks to all who shared the evening.

Remaining events this month are:

Full Moon Celebration on Wednesday, May 14: Potluck at 7:00 pm; ritual at 8:00 pm; open to all.

Women’s New Moon Circle on Wednesday, May 28: Potluck at 7:00 pm, followed by ritual in the Temple at 8:00 pm. This will be an evening of healing for women who have experienced child loss in any form.

Fundraiser to Replace Stolen Sekhmet Statue

Dear Sekhmet Family,

It has now been over a week since thieves removed the statue of Sekhmet from the Temple. Reluctantly, we have looked into having a replacement statue made, and found a wonderful artist in southern California, who can create for us a beautiful (and very heavy) image of Sekhmet.

Many of you have offered to help with the cost of replacement, and while I was hoping that was not going to be necessary, I’m afraid it is. We will also be putting in a high quality security system to keep this sort of thing from happening again.

We are needing to raise at least $3,500. All donations made will go into the temple’s general fund so that any funds raised in excess of what is needed for a replacement statue and security system may be used for other current or future needs.

You can make a donation by Paypal via the button below, or in person at the temple, or by check or money order mailed to:

Temple of Goddess Spirituality, dedicated to Sekhmet
PO Box 813
Indian Springs, Nv 89018

Your donations are tax deductible, and a receipt for your records will be immediately mailed back to you.

I will keep the community posted regularly as to how we are doing with the fund raising, and if all goes as intended, we anticipate that we’ll have an installation/dedication ritual with the new statue sometime in July or August.

Love and Blessings,

Candace Ross
